General description of the collection: The Charles E. Brown papers consist of a published memoir titled: A citizen-soldier field artilleryman tells of his experiences in World War II which shows and describes his induction, initial deferment and subsequent reclassification, daily life at Ft. Hayes, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Jackson, Camp Adair, and Camp Patrick Henry. It continues discussing Officer Candidate School course work, train trips across the US, cadre training and maneuvers, invasion training and its course materials, daily life in combat during the Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley Campaigns. He comments on field dentistry, rations, especially finding fresh food, Italian food peculiarities, and the B Ration Christmas Day Menu. He recalls rest and relaxation leave in Rome, partisans, taking prisoners, VE Day celebrations, occupation duty in NE Italy along the Isonzo River, difficulties with Tito's Yugoslavian troops, return trip to the US, and leave and discharge at Camp Rucker. An appendix contains copies of photos, maps, his service history, personnel papers, rosters, unit history, reserve duty documents, propaganda leaflets, clippings, and V-mail.

Colonel (COL) Charles E. Brown registered for the draft on 16 October 1940 and was assigned deferred student status. On 13 May 1941, he was drafted and declared 4-F.
